Schools replace devices in waves — a year group’s laptops, an ICT suite, a server room after a move to the cloud — and the old kit usually ends up in a cupboard because nobody has time to deal with it. HGC Technologies buys it. We collect from your site, erase every drive to NIST SP 800-88 and IEEE 2883 with a certificate against each serial number, give you a Waste Transfer Note for anything that cannot be reused, and pay the school at the time of collection.

There is no minimum quantity and collection is free anywhere in mainland UK. We buy from single schools, academies and multi-academy trusts, and we are used to working with a business manager, IT technician or trust IT lead rather than a procurement department.

What schools sell to us

  • Staff and student laptops — Dell Latitude, HP ProBook and EliteBook, Lenovo ThinkPad, Microsoft Surface, MacBook Air and MacBook Pro
  • ICT suite desktops and all-in-ones — Dell OptiPlex, HP ProDesk and EliteDesk, Lenovo ThinkCentre, iMac
  • iPads and tablets, including trolley sets
  • Servers and networking left over after a move to cloud services
  • Monitors in quantity, and faulty or broken devices — priced honestly, and often worth more than recycling

What the school gets

  • A firm offer before collection, based on the models, specifications and condition you give us
  • Payment at collection by bank transfer to the school or trust account, after our driver checks the equipment against the signed manifest
  • A serialised asset register of everything collected, for your fixed-asset records and audit trail
  • A signed erasure certificate for every drive, referenced to the device serial number — the evidence your data protection officer will ask for, given the pupil and staff data these devices hold
  • A Waste Transfer Note for anything routed to recycling, showing our carrier registration CBDU584637
  • A UK GDPR Article 28 data processing agreement on request

We explain what each of these documents is for in the paperwork you should get when selling company IT and what an erasure certificate should contain.

Before we collect: managed devices

Most school devices are managed, and a managed device that is still enrolled cannot be resold — it re-enrols itself after a wipe. Before collection, please:

  • Remove Windows devices from Intune, Autopilot and Entra ID (step-by-step guide)
  • Release iPads and Macs from Apple School Manager or your MDM, and sign Macs out of iCloud with Find My turned off (Mac guide)
  • Tell us if any devices have a BIOS or supervisor password set

If your MSP or trust IT team looks after this, we are happy to deal with them directly.

Timing collections around the school day

We collect with our own van and two people, on a date that suits you — including holidays and INSET days when corridors are empty. Nothing is loaded until the manifest and seller’s declaration are signed, and you keep a copy.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a minimum quantity for schools?

No. We buy single devices and whole year-group sets, and collection is free anywhere in mainland UK whatever the quantity.

Who do you pay — the school or the trust?

Whichever account you tell us. Payment is made by bank transfer at the time of collection, after the equipment is checked against the signed manifest.

How is pupil and staff data protected?

Every drive is erased with the MIST platform to NIST SP 800-88 and IEEE 2883, and you receive a signed certificate against each serial number. Physical drive destruction is available if your policy requires it.

Do you buy old or broken school laptops?

Yes. Tell us the fault as precisely as you can and we price it accordingly. If a device has no value after processing we tell you, rather than hiding it in the total.

Can you collect during the school holidays?

Yes. We book collections on a date that suits the school, and holidays and INSET days are often the easiest time.

Do you also supply refurbished laptops to schools?

Yes. We supply tested, graded refurbished laptops to schools and trusts with a 12-month warranty, so a refresh and the disposal of the old devices can be handled together.
