There is no minimum quantity — we buy a single MacBook or an office of two hundred machines — and because we refurbish and resell in-house rather than scrap, we price on what the equipment is actually worth. We are an Environment Agency registered upper-tier waste carrier, registration CBDU584637, and you are welcome to check that on the public register before you deal with us.

Can I sell my old laptop or computer to HGC?

Yes. You do not need to be a business, and there is no minimum quantity. Send the make, model, condition and your postcode using the quote form or WhatsApp. Include any faults and whether the charger is available. We assess each device before offering a price; equipment with no resale value may not attract a payment.

How it works

1. Send us what you have. A list of make, model and quantity, with any faults you know about. For laptops, the model number on the underside (for example A2179 or 14IAP8) tells us most of what we need.
2. We ask the right questions, then make a firm offer. Specification, condition, chargers, and whether devices have been signed out of iCloud, Intune or Autopilot all affect value. We ask before we quote so the offer does not move afterwards.
3. Free collection, anywhere in mainland UK. We collect from your premises with our own van and two people, on a day that suits you. If you would rather post a small number of devices to us, that is fine too. Nothing is loaded until the manifest and seller’s declaration are signed, and you keep a copy.
4. Erasure and certification. Each drive is sanitised with MIST to NIST SP 800-88 and IEEE 2883 and certified against its serial number. Servers are treated component by component, including internal SD modules, boot cards and management controllers, not just the hot-swap drives.
5. You are paid at collection. Our driver checks the equipment against the manifest on site, and payment is made by bank transfer there and then. If anything differs from the list, we tell you on the spot and agree it with you before anything is loaded.

What you receive

• A Waste Transfer Note for any equipment routed to recycling, showing our carrier registration and site exemption

Before you sell: the three things that hold up most collections

These are the problems we see most often, and each one can make a device unsaleable or delay payment. Sorting them before collection is the single biggest thing a seller can do to get the full offer.

• Apple devices still linked to an Apple ID. Every Mac must be signed out of iCloud with Find My Mac turned off. A factory reset does not do this. A Mac still tied to an account is Activation Locked and has almost no resale value.
• Windows laptops still enrolled in Intune or Autopilot. A device left in your Microsoft tenant re-enrols itself on first boot after a wipe. It needs removing from Autopilot, Intune and Entra ID before it leaves you. “We will do it afterwards” usually means it is forgotten.
• BIOS and firmware passwords, and BitLocker. Tell us if a supervisor password is set. We will handle BitLocker as part of erasure, but a locked BIOS cannot be worked around.

We will ask you to confirm these in writing on the seller’s declaration at collection. It protects you as much as us.

Why the offer is what it is

We price each device individually on its achievable resale value after refurbishment, then make a single offer for the lot. That is why we ask for specifications and faults first: a laptop with 16GB of memory and a 512GB drive is a different product from the same model at 8GB and 256GB, and a MacBook that does not power on is priced very differently from one that does. If a device is not worth anything after the cost of processing it, we say so rather than hide it in the total. We do not publish per-unit prices on mixed lots, because they are not honest — every batch is different.

Frequently asked questions

Do you buy laptops from individuals?

Yes. HGC buys personal laptops, MacBooks and desktop computers as well as business equipment. Send the model, condition and postcode for a quote. There is no minimum quantity.

How much is my old laptop worth?

The offer depends on the exact model, processor, memory, storage, age and condition, including battery health and any faults. Send those details or clear photos of the model label. We provide a quote after assessing the equipment rather than advertising a price that may not apply to your device.

What should I do before collection?

Back up files you want to keep, sign out of personal accounts and remove activation or organisation locks. Do not send us passwords or personal files. Tell us about any device-management enrolment or firmware passwords before accepting the quote.

Is there a minimum quantity?

No. We buy single machines and full fleets, and collection is free anywhere in mainland UK whatever the quantity. The offer you accept is the amount you are paid.

Do you buy MacBooks?

Yes, including Intel and Apple silicon models, and units that will not power on. Every Mac must be signed out of iCloud with Find My Mac disabled before collection; a reset alone does not do this.

Do you buy faulty or broken laptops?

Yes. Tell us the fault as precisely as you can — no power, cracked screen, failed drive, water damage — and we price it accordingly. Some faults cost little to repair; some make a device worth only its parts. Either way you get an honest figure.

How is data erased, and do I get proof?

If your policy requires physical destruction instead, we shred and certify. Servers are treated component by component, including internal SD modules and management controllers.

Are you a registered waste carrier?

Yes. HGC Technologies UK Ltd is an Environment Agency upper-tier waste carrier, broker and dealer, registration CBDU584637, and holds a registered WEEE exemption for our Watford site. Both appear on any Waste Transfer Note we issue and can be checked on the Environment Agency public register.

Do you collect, and is collection free?

Yes. Collection is free from anywhere in mainland UK, with our own vehicle and two people. If you are in Northern Ireland, the Scottish islands or outside the UK, ask us — we will usually find a way. You can also post smaller quantities to our Watford warehouse if you prefer.

How and when do I get paid?

At the time of collection. The equipment is inspected on site against the signed manifest and paid for by bank transfer before it leaves your premises. If anything differs from what was listed we discuss it with you there and then, not afterwards.

What paperwork will I receive?

A serialised asset register, an erasure certificate for every drive, a Waste Transfer Note for anything recycled, and a copy of the signed collection manifest and seller’s declaration. A UK GDPR Article 28 processing agreement is available on request.

Do I need to remove the devices from Intune, Autopilot or our Apple Business Manager first?

Yes, before collection. A device still enrolled in your tenant or organisation re-enrols itself after a wipe and cannot be resold. We ask you to confirm this on the seller’s declaration.

Do you buy servers and networking equipment?

Yes — rack and tower servers, switches, UPS units and storage, working or not. If memory or drives have already been removed, tell us; we will often buy those separately as well.

Can you work through our IT support company or MSP?

Yes. Many collections are arranged by the client’s IT provider. We can quote to and pay either party, and we can copy the provider on the certificates and asset register.
